Bega Valley Business has announced that the Bega Valley Business Awards will not be held in 2026, as the organisation takes a strategic pause to refocus its efforts on supporting local businesses and chambers across the region.
The decision comes at a time when many businesses are navigating challenging economic conditions. Bega Valley Business recognises that, while the Awards have long been a highlight on the regional business calendar, they also require a significant investment of time, energy, and financial commitment from local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers.
At the same time, several local chambers are currently in a period of renewal, with new committees working to rebuild engagement, strengthen relationships with their members, and refocus on local priorities. These chambers are best placed to concentrate on initiatives that directly support their own communities, particularly as they rebuild trust and connection with their local business networks.
This year will also see a renewed focus on local recognition, with the Bega Chamber of Commerce delivering its own local business awards program. This provides an opportunity for businesses in Bega to be recognised at a grassroots level, while allowing the broader regional program time to evolve.
Importantly, the decision to pause the Awards is part of a broader strategic shift for the organisation. Delivering the Awards program typically requires three to four months of concentrated effort from the committee. By redirecting this energy, Bega Valley Business aims to deliver greater long-term impact for the region.
Central to this shift is the creation of a new Executive Officer role. This position is intended to provide ongoing support to local chambers and committees, assist in securing grant funding, and help drive initiatives that strengthen the local business ecosystem across the Bega Valley.
Nigel Ayling, President of Bega Valley Business, said the decision was made with the long-term interests of the region in mind.
“This is not the end of the Bega Valley Business Awards — it is a pause and a reset of our focus,” Mr Ayling said.
“We are incredibly proud of what the Awards have achieved over the years in celebrating and showcasing the strength of our business community. However, we believe that right now, the most valuable thing we can do is invest our time and resources into building stronger foundations for our chambers and supporting businesses in a more direct and sustainable way.”
In the coming months, Bega Valley Business will focus its efforts on progressing the Executive Officer role and pursuing funding opportunities that can deliver tangible benefits to local businesses, chambers, and industry groups.
